Tina Yang

Piano Instructor Bloomingdale!

Tina Yang

Tina Yang recognizes that there are three distinct periods in her journey of music. In the first period of training, Tina has two influential teachers in her formative years, Sister Maria L. Uriate, a nun from Spain on a missionary trip in Taiwan, and Professor Carlo Pinto, a prominent pianist and composer in Buffalo, New York. While Sis. Maria laid a strong foundation of piano technique and sight reading skills for her, Prof. Piano focused on training her listening skills for creating the most beautiful and expressive tones from the piano.

As a result, Tina won two piano competitions in her first two years of college, the Baird Concerto Competition of the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, and the National Piano Concerto Competition at Youngstown, Ohio. Subsequently, she performed with the SUNY Buffalo Philharmonia, and the Ohio Symphony Orchestra. The Buffalo News praised her performance as having a “strong technique, bright and vital tone, and a poetic command of the instrument".

After completing two master's degrees in piano solo performance (1991), and chamber music and piano accompaniment (1993), Tina moved to Phoenix, Arizona, and began the second period of expanding in her musical journey. She taught as an adjunct faculty at Mesa Community College, and developed a system to help adult learners acquire sufficient keyboard skills within two years, so that they could play repertoire such as sonatinas and inventions.

Meanwhile, Tina became very active in the music ministry of True Jesus Church in Phoenix. She served not only as a pianist, but also as a singer, choir conductor, and composer. She is currently a member of the Music Ministry Committee of her church. Her projects include developing curriculum for church musicians, and writing children's Bible verse songs.

Now Tina is in the third period of nurturing and mentoring. Tina's experiences in piano teaching, singing, conducting, and songwriting have helped her to appreciate the many layers of music. She has developed an unique approach in piano pedagogy, from incorporating breathing, wellness of the body, and score analysis, to keen listening of the sound of the piano. She guides her students with freedom in movement to explore the rich sonority of the piano with cultural awareness and artistic development. Young piano teachers also come to her for advice and guidance.

Tina is excited to join Noteable Notes Music Academy. With her piano pedagogy, she will help students here to blossom to their best potential.
